Clean-Water FAQ

Comprehensive question bank for clients, stakeholders, and cynics.

How should I store the powder, and what is its shelf life?

Store the microbial culture powder in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, keeping the container tightly sealed against moisture.

Under the recommended storage conditions, the stated shelf life is one year.

Yes, this is common. A temporary increase in cloudiness after dosing is usually a combination of the fine Geolite mineral dispersing and a temporary bacterial bloom as large numbers of microbes activate at once.

It typically settles within about 12 to 24 hours, leaving the water clearer than before, and generally resolves as the microbial population establishes itself and begins consuming available organic matter.

If cloudiness persists or increases significantly, the site conditions should be evaluated to determine whether another factor is responsible.

Several factors can affect how quickly the microbial treatment produces visible results. The most common are:

  • Low dissolved oxygen — the aerobic bacteria need oxygen to digest waste efficiently
  • Extreme pH or unsuitable water temperature — water that is too cold or highly acidic stalls bacterial growth
  • Chemical residues — recent use of algaecides, fish medications, or residual chlorine may have wiped out the colony
  • Very high pollution or organic load
  • Continuous inflow of untreated pollutants

If there is little or no improvement after the expected period, the water body should be assessed to identify the underlying cause rather than simply increasing the microbial dosage.

The microbial cultures can function in water bodies without dedicated aeration, but aeration makes them significantly more effective.

Our microbial treatment includes aerobic micro-organisms that consume oxygen as they digest waste. Aeration increases oxygen availability and water movement, allowing these organisms to work far more effectively in breaking down organic matter.

For this reason, we generally recommend combining beneficial microbial cultures with aeration, particularly in heavily polluted or oxygen-deficient water bodies.
